Tiger Woods Done for Year

Doug Ferguson

Associated Press

"Tiger Woods is done for the year, but not without one last major that he said might have been his best ever.
Woods explained why Wednesday when he revealed he will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee that he injured 10 months ago."

The rest of the story can be found here.

I never knew or could understand why golfers are considered to be so important until I did some research.
Consider this what I found:
In 1923, Who Was:

1. President of the largest steel company?
2. President of the largest gas company?
3. President of the New York Stock Exchange?
4. Greatest wheat speculator?
5. President of the Bank of International Settlement?
6. Great Bear of Wall Street?

These men were considered some of the worlds most successful of their days. Now, 85 years later, the history book asks us, if we know what ultimately became of them.

The Answers:

1. The president of the largest steel company, Charles Schwab, died a pauper.
2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, went insane.
3. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home.
4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, penniless.
5. The president of the Bank of International Settlement, shot himself.
6. The Great Bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Livermore, also committed suicide.

However, in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion and the winner of the most important golf tournament, the US Open, was Gene Sarazen.

What became of him? He played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95.

He was financially secure at the time of his death.

The Moral: Forget work. Play golf.

That's a very interesting thought. Perhaps if I start playing golf I might become financially secure?? Oh but I read somewhere that GOLF was so named because it meant Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden.

As much as I love the general philosophy, I also believe Mark Twain's saying that "Golf is a good walk ruined".
I have tried it so many times and even on my best day it caused me more stress and anxiety in searching for lost balls.
I'll go with a day in the garden anytime.
Great post yet again!

Some interesting statistics. But I think I agree with Mark Twain, and David.

I have never really wanted to learn to play golf. I also think that environmentally we are ruining the East Coast with the thousand or so golf courses. But I am sure it is much healthier to golf than try to make lots of money.

I think the message here is if you do something you are passionate about, something that you do simply because you absolutely LOVE it and LIVE for it rather than because it will necessarily gain you wealth, it is better for our souls and we live longer, better lives.

That's my take on things because that's my overall philosophy. I don't golf, but I do love other things that have nothing to do with a pressure-cooker job. I hope it will add some years to my life, but even if it doesn't I'll still die happy!

I hope this Bear doesn't have bad knees. He doesn't look too happy. Afraid I agree with Mark Twain: "Golf is a good walk spoiled." LOL
