Pick a Pooch

President-elect Obama said, "I love you both more than you can imagine, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House," to Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, during his victory speech in Chicago.
*
Mr. Obama says a main criterion for his family's first dog would be whether it is hypoallergenic, since his daughter Malia is allergic. Experts say an ideal first dog should also be good with kids and visitors.
*
But he also said, " On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts, like me. So -- so whether we're going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household."
*
A poodle was the top choice for the Obamas in an American Kennel Club survey of more than 42,000 people, the organization said.
Another breed that typically doesn't shed is a Scottish Terrier.
But then one of the dog breeds with a more friendly temperament is a Cocker spaniel.
*
Does anyone have another breed that they would like to suggest for the first-family's consideration?

I like Scottiea but I wonder if a pug would work. My son and his wife had one that was wonderful with the boys.

I'll bet they have hundreds of suggestions from animal shelters all over the US of A of an adoptable hypoallergenic doggie - hopefully out of that will come a connection!

Kind of nice to have a younger family in the WH - kids and puppies.

Of course it would have to be a West Highland Terrier. They dont shed, are funny and clever and faithful and cuddly and love children. At least mine does. He should have a black skin on his head and belly rather than pink, as Westies with pink skins are more likely to have uticaria.

My favoritest (it's a word, yes, it is) dog was a cocker spaniel, but I'm not sure about the allergy thing.

I currently have a mixed lab/chow and would personally drive him to the White House and pay the president's kids to take him off my hands.

Not really, my kids wouldn't allow it. But a girl can still dream.......

I personally have alway loved any of the working dog breeds and thay are NOT for the White House life. What about a boxer...do they shed? They are wonderful for playing catch.

A Bichon is hypoallergenic. We had one. As a matter of fact he was my first "baby."

I like a cocker spaniel. I just think it would be perfect for the girls.

How about a Mexican Hairless? Do they really have no hair? If not, one of those hideously ugly furless cats might do. I know it's not a dog, but...

Is there really such thing as a hypoallergenic dog? Just wondering.

I am seconding Mental p mama's suggestion. I had a Bichon and he was the most affectionate dog I ever had. He was also a very intelligent dog and was easy to train. He used to give me a hug when I asked him to. (Too complicated to explain, but I wish I had a picture.) He was not a biter.
Miniature Schnauzers are also good dogs and don't shed.

My friend got a Bichon Frise because they don't shed and don't usually bother people with allergies. They won't find one in a shelter, though (or I doubt it).

No idea what a hypoallergenic dog is. But we have a lovely Boxer, Hound, Pitbull mix that is just about the best dog you could hope for. Yep, Daisy Head Mayzie. I hope they find one as delightful as she is to us.

Definitely a shelter dog. No excuses.

my neighbor is allergic and has a Maltese.

I've seen a few on petfinder.com although they may be mixed and then there's the allergy issue again.

Actually, I believe it's the skin dander rather than the hair that causes the allergens: poodles are good and very smart, schnauser's are cute as buttons . . .but me I'm a Labrador girl as much as you're a Beary lady!

Its I think more a dander issue than a shedding/fur issue .. nevertheless, I am sure there's a mutt out there that will fit the bill.

Donations to shelters are down with the economy in the loo ... so if they did get a shelter pup, I believe it would inspire others to do the same

Gotta be a shelter pooch. It would be the right thing to do.
