$1.00 and $2.00 Coins?

Here in Canada, we have the Loonie $1.00 coin and the Toonie $2.00 coin.
They have replaced the $1.00 and $2.00 paper bills that were in circulation.

In the USA, $1.00 coins are minted and circulated but because the paper bills are still printed, the coins are not popularly accepted in circulation.

My question to my American blogger friends is; if your government asked you to decide if the $1.00 and $2.00 paper bills should be eliminated and replaced with coins, what would be your answer?

I had no idea this was an ongoing issue...sadly that shows how monetarily I'm challenged.
The coins would be heavier - and my purse weighs so much now, I'd hate for it to weigh more. WAIT - I never have money in my purse anyway...so I guess it's a nonissue for me. ;-)

I have no desire for more coins in my purse as well. You'd think the dollar would be devalued enough, but not yet.

We've had one and two dollar coins for years here. The only puzzle is that the one is larger than the two; don't ask me why. We don't miss the paper money at all.

Simply because I don't do well with change (changing things as well as spare change), I probably would vote to keep the paper. But if someone gave a compelling enough argument, I could also see supporting the coins.

I'm easy either way, I guess.

no way! no more coins please!

I always seem to have more ones than any other denomination .. and if they were coins they'd be heavier and I would need to carry a change purse as well as a wallet - mine doesnt have a change purse which means I drop change into a pocket and into a jar when I get home .. umm ... I have learned one thing in my life so far: Change happens

I think, due to the weight, I'd prefer paper money. But I also know that it is perishable and using coins would be better for the environment and the economy.

We have $1 coins now, and I always confuse them with quarters. I like paper. $2 bills are rare, and carried for good luck!

No more coins!!! I like the bills because they are easier to carry.

Ugh....

I would confuse the $2 coin for a dollar one and end up costing me twice as much for everything. (That's assuming the clerks didn't correct my error.) No, please, no coins replacing paper. I'm addled enough as it it.

The way the libs are throwing money out the window with bailouts, the U.S. Dollar isn't worth diddly, ---so the vending machines which here to for took quarters will quickly be retooled to accept 1.00 coins------as long as they make the money so one can tell at a glance its deomination, I have no problem with coins---I can see it now----all the men walking around with a bag of gold coins dangling from their belts---hmm maybe we will even get back to the puffy sleeved shirts they wore in tghe middle ages ? (lol)

My first reaction is no more change jangling around in my pocket or purse. Too heavy and solid. Paper can be squashed and shoved into lots of nooks and cranies. I would listen to the arguments for the coins but it would have to be a very strong argument.
Great question Bear.

They would be heavier of course. But I like them very much. And don't you love the names - Loonie and Toonie? they're just fun. Not practical, but fun.

We converted to coins ages ago too but it can be a Godsend when you think you're broke then find 15 $2.00 coins in your change purse - phew! It's the five cent coins I don't get. If everything ends in .99 and we round up, what's the point of a five cent coin?

I really can't say what I really think, so here goes. Leave our currency alone, I would rather carry bills in place of coins, Baino is right about the five cent coin. I am wishing you a Happy New Year.

I really wouldnt have a problem with it as long as they made it distinctive enough to tell it from other coins. In the past they have made one generation of coin dollars so close to our quarter dollar that it was often mistakenly used as a quarter.

Dear Bear ~~ The Canadian coins are pretty. We have had $1.00 and $2.00 coins here in Australia for years.
They are gold colored to distinguish from the smaller coins and we get along well with them.
Thanks for your Christmas wishes and also sympathy for our friends. I hope you and your loved ones have a very Happy New Year in 2009. Love and Hugs, Merle.

I am in the minority, I would prefer coins. My reasons are:

1. I hate having a wad of bills in my wallet, purse.

2. When the bills get crumpled they are a pain to put in a vending machine.

3. You can't flip a dollar bill.

I've never really understood why American bills are all the same size and colour so that $1 and $20 bills feel the same. In the UK the notes; £5 notes (in short supply), £10 notes, £20 notes and £50 notes (not always accepted in shops) are different sizes so even poorly sighted people can distinquish them.
£1 notes were phased out years ago in favour of coins - the weight is certainly a problem but they are practical.

I kind of like one dollar bills : ). I can't really fit more coins in my wallet!

I like the paper but if we had fun names like loonie and toonie, I could be persuaded otherwise.
