I want to thank everyone who left such heartfelt and thoughtful comments on yesterday’s ABC Wednesday post.

How very ironic that yesterday afternoon, the body of our 97th fallen soldier, Sgt. Prescott (Scott) Shipway arrived at CFB Trenton to take that solemn journey down the Highway of Heroes to Toronto, Ontario.
*
My opinion on this war will be kept personal; but I wanted everyone to see and know that we Canadians honour and respect our armed forces and we will never forget their bravery.
*
On this day, the anniversary of 9/11/01, I thought maybe I would show you why we must HAVE PEACE NOW.
*
What better way to say GIVE PEACE A CHANCE than to learn the names and see the pictures of our Canadian HEROES.

These 98 photographs are of the 97 Canadian soldiers and the one Canadian diplomat who have lost their lives in Afghanistan since the deployment in 2002.

The 172 kilometre stretch of Highway 401 between Trenton, Ontario and Toronto, Ontario in Canada has been designated as the
"HIGHWAY OF HEROES."
*
It is along this route that many Canadians pay tribute to the solemn journey our fallen soldiers take once their bodies return to Canada and are formally transported from Canadian Forces Base Trenton to Toronto.
*
On over-passes, along roadsides and sometimes even on the medians; firefighters, police officers, paramedics, veterans and ordinary Canadians waving flags; stand proudly as the military vehicles carrying Canada's casualties from Afghanistan roll by.
*
They are providing a civilian version of what in military jargon is called over-watch, solemnly presiding over the safe return of their soldiers.
*

I'm Going Shopping

I would like to thank every one for your helpful comments to my fashion question from yesterday. I really appreciate your input.

I had my husband read what every one said----and he has decided to take me shopping for something new and more colourful for our anniversary portrait!
My black lace dress is lovely and I have only worn it once but then I started to have second thoughts about wearing it for the photograph.
*
The thing about me is that I have an extremely long neck and the lace dress has a low scooped neckline which definitely shows off the length of my neck. Knowing how sensitive I am about this, I would probably not be happy with the finished photo.
*
So I am going to see if I can find another dress with a higher neckline in a brighter colour.
If I can't find a suitable dress then my next choice would be this sporty outfit here which is shown in the photo below.
These are the colours that look good on me when I am wearing them.

Do you all remember a few years back when everyone had their "Colours" done?
I am an Autumn.

We have a Bianca Nygård store near home, so I can try this outfit on at the store and not have to order it through the web store.
Now if I could just order the model's youthful complexion then I would be one happy lady.

A Picture is Worth

A few months ago for our anniversary, our daughter and son-in-law gave my husband and I a gift certificate for a photography session with a local photo studio here in our home town.

Because I was still recuperating from my accident and surgery, we kept postponing an appointment with the studio until now.

Of course, you know that I will definitely have my hair styled on the day we schedule a session with the photographer. And I just might have my make-up done professionally also.

*

Since we want this to be a more formal portrait; I am wondering if I should wear my black lace dress or would something more colourful be better? My husband will be wearing a black suit and white shirt with a grey and black tie.

*

So what does every one think?

Any and all suggestions and/or comments would be greatly appreciated.

"One Canadian soldier was killed and seven others wounded Sunday during a roadside bomb explosion in the Panjwaii district of Kandahar province, a military official said.

Sgt. Scott Shipway died after his armoured vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during a security patrol around 12:30 p.m. local time, said Brig.-Gen. Denis Thompson.
The wounded soldiers were reported in good condition and were well enough to telephone their families.
"The Afghan National Army helped secure the scene and the Canadian casualties were moved to the closest safe area," Thompson told reporters at Kandahar Airfield.
Shipway was with the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Man. He was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan and was only one week away from returning home, military officials said.
They said he will be remembered by his friends as a dedicated father and Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, as well as a strong platoon leader who served in Bosnia, Kosovo and Cyprus.
"The troops in his platoon loved him and referred to him as Papa Shipway. He was very loyal to his friends and his motto was 'Never let a comrade down,'" Thompson said.
The latest fatality brings to 97 the number of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2002."

Sheet Happens

We are in the market for new sheets for our master bedroom so I have been doing some much needed research on purchasing bedding.
*
The one thing that I do know is that I will have to pay careful attention to the deep pocket size of the fitted sheet for the mattress we own. If I am going to spend a substantial amount of money for new bedding I want to be sure that the fitted bottom sheet is not too snug. Right now every time I change the bedding I know that I will break a nail or two trying to fit that too snug, fitted bottom sheet on my VERY thick mattress.

I have decided to purchase 500 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets that have a silk light feel. They have a classic woven stripe and are available in the ivory colour that I want.
The complete set of flat sheet, fitted bottom and two pillow cases is on sale right now for $180.00 plus tax.
I am going to buy two sets so that I can rotate them to prevent unnecessary wear.

After spending over $400.00 on this bedding; I hope I sleep better because if I don't, the sheet is going to hit the fan.

3 Canadians die in Taliban attack

" Three Canadian soldiers died Wednesday when their vehicle came under attack by insurgents in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar province.
The deaths of corporals Andrew (Drew) Grenon, 23, and Mike Seggie, 21, and Pte. Chad Horn, 21, infantrymen with the 2 Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from CFB Shilo, Man., brings the military toll in Afghanistan to 96 since 2002.
The Taliban have already taken responsibility for the attack. The ambush comes on the third day of Ramadan, which many had felt might cause a slowdown in the fighting here in Afghanistan.

But Brig.-Gen. Denis Thompson, Canada's top soldier in Kandahar, said he did not expect that the insurgency would let up in the coming weeks during the Muslim holy month.
"Many people have different opinions on what Ramadan means in term of the insurgents," he said. "I can tell you that the governor of this province, Gov. Raufi, told me just yesterday not to expect them to let up at all and that they were not going to respect Ramadan and that it would be business as usual as far as the insurgents were concerned."
Five other soldiers were injured in the attack Wednesday, which took place while during a security patrol in the Taliban stronghold of Zhari. All eight were taken by helicopter to Kandahar Air Field, where one was in critical condition and another in serious, but stable condition."

Isn't it Great to see how GRAND

Back to School

Here in Canada summer vacation for students ends the day after Labour day.

Today is the day that all the children are either going back to school or starting their first days of education in Kindergarten.

Please everyone be EXTRA cautious when driving today.

*

I am sure we can all remember the excitement we felt on that first day back to class and when children are excited and/or nervous, they might forget the safety rules.

*

So it is up to all of us to pay attention when driving, especially if you are near a school area.

Good luck to all the students and a special bear hug to my oldest grandson who will be starting Senior Kindergarten today.
