Forgotten Heroes

After posting yesterday about the propane explosion in Toronto and the death of firefighter Bob Leek; I started thinking how we tend to forget about all the heroes out there in our cities, countries and the world who are doing their jobs – to serve and protect.
*
*
Why do we seem to only praise and remember them when a tragedy or death occurs?
*
*
Should we not each day remind ourselves that every second they are on the job, they are there for us, putting their lives in danger for us?
*
Our soldiers, the firefighters, the police, the medical personnel, the EMT and the hundreds of volunteers from the Red Cross and the Salvation Army etc. are there doing their jobs and not asking for or expecting anything from us.
*
Daily they are doing their jobs; not expecting accolades from us, the general public.
*
Human nature being what it is; we all tend to forget about them until a tragedy or death occurs.
*
So today I want to publicly say “Thank You” to each and every one of you out there.
You are my super heroes.
*
And you are not forgotten.

My son-in-law, Brian, graduates as a fireman in Sydney at the end of this month. He has longed to get into the Fire Service for years; it's very popular here. He's loved the training and we're all very happy for him. So much so that we haven't really thought about the danger! We're atending his passing-out, so your bear is very timely for us at the moment.

You are SO right!! We need to remember to do this often. They deserve our praise and our thanks daily.

I second that! They are taken for granted much of the time...until you need them.

AMEN. I have several relatives that are either police or firemen and I worry about them constantly.

Absolutely: they deserve our thanks and appreciation for doing a really important and dangerous job.

I think it's human nature to not be able to sustain a level of gratitude full time, that's why a tragedy reminds us.

But of course you're absolutely right!

Here in NY/NJ we lost some many on 9/11 that it is very hard to ever forget them and very few of us take them for granted as we used to.

Well said, Bear!
I share your sentiments.

Well said, Bear ... I would add that whenever you see a police or fire person in person a thank you is a nice greeting ... and I suspect will be extremely well received!

Sometimes we just take things for granted----its a human failing I suspect. You are of course right, we need to hold these people in high regard and be more consciensous about openly complimenting them for their good work.

Awww - that is so nice. And so true. What a thoughtful post. Thanks for shedding light on an area that needs it.

Amen and point well taken.
Thank you is just 2 words...I don't know why we don't use it more.

I agree. And it not only applies to firefighters, I believe it is our nature, unfortunately, to take most things and people for granted until they are gone.

Although I am not always successful, I do try to always end a conversation with my family members with an, "I love you" or something similar so that if anything were to happen (to them or to me), at least the last words will have been positive ones.

We have many self-less volunteer firefighters and EMT's where I live. I find it even more incredible that these people not only put their lives on the line but do so without pay or recognition and on their own time, usually on call 24 hours a day. They truly are incredible, thanks for the reminder.

What a wonderful reminder to thank those who give so much to make us safe. I think firefighters are true heroes as well as nurses, teachers, and others who build their lives around helping others. It's important recognize them and be grateful for all they do.

Terrific post - our neighbor is a volunteer FF and sometimes he is out 3 times in a night.

You're so right here! We really should be more thankful, not only when accidents occur. Such brave guys they are!

I hope you're feeling better and getting back to your old self without too much trouble.
I wanted to thank you for your oh-so-kind and thoughtful comments. I've really been through some emotional knotholes lately....I'm hoping its over with.
I retired from a police department and used to dispatch police and fire/EMS. Something like this hits us so very very hard. No one realizes how often these brave souls put their lives on the line. God Bless them all.
Bless you too. Hugs.
