No News is Good News

Have you ever had one of those mornings that make you just want to crawl back into bed with the covers over your head?
Those days when you feel turned inside out?
When you say to yourself “I am never reading the news again!”

Well today was that day for me.

Could someone out there please explain what is happening in my country, Canada?

I read about this happening in Manitoba and this in Québec.

In Calgary, Alberta a beaten man dies on steps of home.

Closer to home in Ontario there was a case of mistaken identity and a man is savagely beaten.

I can not understand why we have become such a violent society.

Is there something-- anything that I personally could or should do?

I am feeling very sad and vulnerable so I'm grabbing a teddy bear, getting back into bed beside Ted E and probably will shed a few tears.

I don't believe it's just your country, Bear. The world has grown more violent. Stress? Fear? The influence of the media? Who knows? And more importantly - what are the answers? More and more people I know are telling me they won't read or listen to the news any more. They can't deal with it.
I do partially blame the media because they sensationalize every story instead of just reporting.
I don't think you and I can do a whole lot except try to keep our own little portions of the world peaceful and teach by example. And pray.

BEAR: I agree it is disheartning to read and see articles about crime all the time but so many people like sensationalism, it sells. I guess all we can do as individuals is try to keep ourselves and others safe.

traveled here from TGB and think you're very imaginative in your bear dress-ups. could we talk about the appeal of dolls as we get older?

the news here in new york city requires a pride of teddies to get me cheered up. not turning on the radio helps!

yours, naomi

It certainly isn't just your country BEAR....unfortunately it's EVERYWHERE! But..I know what you mean. I have felt the same way after reading the paper and seeing such stories....shaking my head, and sometimes bringing tears to my eyes. Such cruely and senseless acts of violence that really do make you just want to pull the covers over your head and retreat into a safe and quiet place. Life can be scary these days...but, I have in the wonderful people out there than in the not so wonderful ones. Feel better sweetie.....

I agree, the entire world is going crazy, which is why I returned to my teeny tiny hometown to live. We manage to avoid most of the bad news. Eventually all that stress and violence will make its way here, but hopefully after I'm dead and gone.

Oh, and for the very reasons you cited, I no longer watch the news. News is not only good, but the 24-hour "news" channels have way too much time to fill in and so they really stretch the definition of what is news, what is gossip, what is so-called entertainment, and what is just plain ridiculous.

Hi Bear
Move over and I'll join you, It's worldwide I'm afraid. Here in the UK we are experiencing a flood of knife attacks.I try to believe there is more goodness out there than bad but it's bad news that sells.Maybe someone should start a site with only good news and we can all chip in with good news posts.

Dear Bear,

I do share your pain. It's so sad to think that people are capable of committing such horrible acts of violence. But, being from the San Francisco Bay Area, I've never felt safer than when I was in your beautiful country. Compared to us, Canada is a haven of peace and kindness.

I listened to the news and immediately my black humor (a method of making scary things funny to be able to process them) kicked in and I thought ... see what happens when you snore on a bus ..

As for the rest of the news, I really stopped listening after that ...

AND I try to never read the front page of the newspaper ...

Despite all our comforts and conveniences, we aren't so very civilized at all. It can be most depressing.

"Louis" thanks you for visiting San Francisco Bay Daily Photo - he knew some would think he meant bows as in ribbons when he was referring to bows on ships. :-) Ah! Those tricky English words with the same spelling, two meanings (in this case 3) and two pronounciations!

When I first saw the bus story my immediate thought was - "Not in Canada!"

My understanding was that Canada was a lot calmer than the States but it doesnt' matter where it is.

What matters is how the media loves this - what's the old saying - if it bleeds, it leads. I get most of my news from websites I trust and from the BBC. Local news is a joke - it's all sensationalism.
