The 172 kilometre stretch of Highway 401 between Trenton, Ontario and Toronto, Ontario in Canada has been designated as the
"HIGHWAY OF HEROES."
*
It is along this route that many Canadians pay tribute to the solemn journey our fallen soldiers take once their bodies return to Canada and are formally transported from Canadian Forces Base Trenton to Toronto.
*
On over-passes, along roadsides and sometimes even on the medians; firefighters, police officers, paramedics, veterans and ordinary Canadians waving flags; stand proudly as the military vehicles carrying Canada's casualties from Afghanistan roll by.
*
They are providing a civilian version of what in military jargon is called over-watch, solemnly presiding over the safe return of their soldiers.
*
The following pictures from various news sites will tell the story better than any words I could post here in this blog.

Ninety-seven Canadian soldiers have died since Canada's military deployed to Afghanistan in 2002.

Oh My! That is so touching. What a beautiful tribute to Canada's Heroes.
You have really made a touching, thought-provoking post for your ABC Wednesday. The idea to do this for the sons and daughters of Canada, and their loved ones, is brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing.
Oh my, thank you so much for sharing this. Out West we don't get to see this sort of thing. We read almost every day of the soldiers that are killed in the line of duty but don't get to pay homage to them. There have been 97 now, right? The Americans seem to think they are the only ones who have their men and boys over there fighting the fight against terrorism.
That was a BIG post for H. Love it:)Greate to honour greate people!
a very educational post, and a fitting tribute to those people
Excellent choise. Good for you and their souls.
Oh, thank you for that..what a lovely idea to honor the fallen!
Annie

Great topic, great post, great pictures !
Thanks for your kind comment !
miss Yves
What moving pictures! And how sad. We have lost few soldiers in Australia but we'd all like the war to be over so that there's no risk of more. What a waste of life!
Very moving, Bear. They receive more overt commemoration than US dead who are not talked about,it seems by decree.
you should be so proud . I love Canadians for their dedication and its my favorite place to visit ..
i just wish you were not there in this awful war..
I sent t you an award on my blog which came from ratmammy to me enjoy
What sad miles those are but what a wonderful tribute to those and their families that have given their all.
Bless them all.
And thank you for sharing this wonderful tribute.
This is a wonderful show of patriotism and respect for these fallen heroes. I salute these brave men and women who have given their lives for their country.
Excellent post!
Beautiful post. May God bless them all.
Perfect choise for H-word. A tribute to the heroes!!!
Thank you for showing us a little of how the fallen are HONORED in Canada. This is a very moving collection of photos. Thank you.
That is an amazing post. TY for sharing how Canada honors its fallen heroes.
Several years ago, I visited St. John's of Chauncey Anglican church in Vancouver. The church has beautiful stained glass windows honoring Canada's heroes from WWI.
What a beautiful post. I hope all the soldiers can come home soon. The loss of life is always heart breaking.
Very moving. What a wonderful tribute to your heroes!
Thanks for sharing this with us.
Oh Bear, a wonderful post. Thank you.
A wonderful touching and moving blog, great set of photos to show us all how we should thank our heroes.
Thanks for comments on my "H" blog
What a moving tribute. This is how it should be done. You put us to shame. Thank you for sharing.
This is an interesting and truly moving post. This war touches us all in many ways and I admire the courage and loyalty of the Canadians.
What a moving, emotional post. I'll remember Canada's Highway of Heroes.
very sad. touching. fitting that these persons are honored. and yet, their loss is tragic.
That is very moving.
Hi,
Thanks for popping over to my blog.
The bear I used in that picture is my wife's beloved teddy bear. I bought it for her before we were married and it was probably the best gift I ever gave her.
I got the bear to pose with monopoly money to illustrate the post. My wife pointed out that he was now famous in the blogosphere. On hearing this, the bear demanded an appearance fee and royalties. Ah, the modern world of celebrity!
Hi, Bier
Sad, very beautiful and more exciting, I came to cry.
hugs, Denise
This is a great tribute to Canada's fallen soldiers. Thank you for sharing it with us today.
I don't think we have such a highway for heroes.
But I would guess every town here in the united states has some type of memorial for there heroes.
We have a stone craving of our vets that severed our country.
I enjoyed this post anyhow one thing about reading blogs there such a human touch to them.
Thanks for stopping in and as always the coffee is on.
Oh Bear .. that was so touching that I am truly fa-klempt.

Thank you Bear Naked, for this wonderful post.
My neighbours two doors down are the parents of the fallen Canadian UN peacekeeper who was killed on the border of Lebanon and Israel two summers ago. He was killed as a result of the conflict between the Hezbollah and the Israelis.
Thus, this route between Toronto and Trenton holds special significance for them and for those of us who supported them in the sadness.
Of course, it adds to our keen interest in those soldiers who continue to give their lives everyday as they try to protect the lives of the innocent in far off worlds.

Bravo, Canada! It is very moving and a contrast to our shameful administration that tries to hide our war dead.
I salute you.
So many poignant photos along that Highway, from dawn until dusk. Very sobering and interesting post and I salute you for the reminder...
That is very moving. I'm not even Canadian, but it brings tears to my eyes.
The people did this for Ronald Reagan's funeral too; I remember watching on TV and being moved to tears.
This is a wonderful post, Bear. Thanks for your comments on mine.
Wonderful and very touching post, along with one saluting bear! Well done!
Cheers, Klaus
what a perfect H post!
what a perfect H post!
Wonderful H post. Thank you for visiting my blog recently, too, and for all your support.
What a moving story and choice H = HEROES
My H for HIGHWAY
My eyes are so full of tears that I can hardly type this. This is so moving. What more can I say?
What a wonderfully patriotic and thought provoking post for H. You put a lot of work into it. A great post.
Lovely tribute to these heros.
So touching - I'm glad for the good turn out of people for these heroes.
What a wonderful tribute to your soldiers...
That was absolutely inspiring to see so many paying tribute. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I knew by the title of this post over at David's POTD, that I'd have to steel myself and come read it. Every week, it seems that there's one to three "babies" coming home and traveling that highway. I see their young faces and recognize the look of pride in their eyes. My son is in his third year of officer training at RMC (Royal Military College in Kingston) and I fear the day that he will be deployed. My heart lurches every time another young son or daughter travels that length of highway. Thanks for your lovely tribute to them.
I was transixed, my eyes full.
Thanks so much for this.
Dx
Goodness, that is a very moving thing to do. What a wonderful tribute.
Wow . .missed this one. A fitting tribute. We have been fortunate in some ways. Our small contingent in Iraq and Afghanistan has led to only 4 deaths (one a suspected suicide). Terrible price to pay.
Very touching and very appropriate! It is especially meaningful to us bloggers south of Toronto on this day.
didn't know about a highway dedicated to the fallen heroes. Thanks for sharing.
I'm late to visit this week and it seems it's already been said, however, I admire your post very much--it is both tender and thought provoking.
