The 172 kilometre stretch of Highway 401 between Trenton, Ontario and Toronto, Ontario in Canada has been designated as the
"HIGHWAY OF HEROES."

It is along this route that many Canadians pay tribute to the solemn journey our fallen soldiers take once their bodies return to Canada and are formally transported from Canadian Forces Base Trenton to Toronto.

On over-passes, along roadsides and sometimes even on the medians; firefighters, police officers, paramedics, veterans and ordinary Canadians waving flags; stand proudly as the military vehicles carrying Canada's casualties from Afghanistan roll by.

They are providing a civilian version of what in military jargon is called over-watch, solemnly presiding over the safe return of their soldiers.

Oh my, thank you so much for sharing this. Out West we don't get to see this sort of thing. We read almost every day of the soldiers that are killed in the line of duty but don't get to pay homage to them. There have been 97 now, right? The Americans seem to think they are the only ones who have their men and boys over there fighting the fight against terrorism.

What moving pictures! And how sad. We have lost few soldiers in Australia but we'd all like the war to be over so that there's no risk of more. What a waste of life!

Several years ago, I visited St. John's of Chauncey Anglican church in Vancouver. The church has beautiful stained glass windows honoring Canada's heroes from WWI.

I don't think we have such a highway for heroes.
But I would guess every town here in the united states has some type of memorial for there heroes.
We have a stone craving of our vets that severed our country.
I enjoyed this post anyhow one thing about reading blogs there such a human touch to them.

My neighbours two doors down are the parents of the fallen Canadian UN peacekeeper who was killed on the border of Lebanon and Israel two summers ago. He was killed as a result of the conflict between the Hezbollah and the Israelis.
Thus, this route between Toronto and Trenton holds special significance for them and for those of us who supported them in the sadness.
Of course, it adds to our keen interest in those soldiers who continue to give their lives everyday as they try to protect the lives of the innocent in far off worlds.

The people did this for Ronald Reagan's funeral too; I remember watching on TV and being moved to tears.

I knew by the title of this post over at David's POTD, that I'd have to steel myself and come read it. Every week, it seems that there's one to three "babies" coming home and traveling that highway. I see their young faces and recognize the look of pride in their eyes. My son is in his third year of officer training at RMC (Royal Military College in Kingston) and I fear the day that he will be deployed. My heart lurches every time another young son or daughter travels that length of highway. Thanks for your lovely tribute to them.

Wow . .missed this one. A fitting tribute. We have been fortunate in some ways. Our small contingent in Iraq and Afghanistan has led to only 4 deaths (one a suspected suicide). Terrible price to pay.
