Do Not Call List

In Canada. the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) will launch today, September 30, 2008. It is designed to reduce the number of unwanted telemarketing calls and faxes Canadians receive.

As of September 30, 2008, you can register your home phone, cellular or fax number(s) on the National DNCL.

Signing up is simple, quick and free. You can sign up online at http://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/ or by calling the toll-free numbers 1-866-580-DNCL (1-866-580-3625) or 1-888-DNCL-TTY (1-888-362-5889).

Once you have signed up, many telemarketers can no longer call you starting 31 days after your registration.

You must renew your registration every three years if you want your number(s) to stay on the National DNCL.

Registering on the National DNCL will reduce but not eliminate all telemarketing calls and faxes.

There are certain kinds of telemarketing calls and faxes that are exempt from the National DNCL, including those made by or on behalf of:

registered charities seeking donations
newspapers looking for subscriptions
political parties and their candidates, and
companies with whom you have an existing commercial relationship in the previous 18 months

Telemarketers making exempt calls must maintain their own do not call lists. If you do not want to be called by these telemarketers, you can ask to be put on their do not call lists. They are obliged to do so within 31 days.

You will continue to receive calls from organizations conducting market research, polls or surveys even though you are registered on the National DNCL. These are not considered telemarketing calls because they are not selling a product or service, or requesting donations.

It is not a perfect solution to eliminate unwanted telephone calls but at least, we here in Canada, can now stop SOME of those annoying interruptions to our days and/or nights.
I am signing up, are you?

I think I will. Feel sorry as they are trying to make a living but I can't get a word in to politely say "no". Thanks for posting the #

Don't you hate it when you sit down to eat dinner and get one of these calls.

This has really changed since we got the do-not-call list in the US.

We've had that here in the states for a while and they've figured out ways around it. Now I get these calls that there is no one on the other end. They want you to call the number back to see who called and if you call them, you're free game for their sales pitch. It's getting as bad as it was before only now no one is on the other end! grrrr.....

I'm on the list. I definitely think it helps. Those calls can be so annoying. I still get calls for some donations here and there...mostly Police Organizations. I think it's well worth signing up.

I've just been catching-up on the blogs I missed! How do you manage to find such apt bears? Surely you're not sewing little costumes deep into the night! My favourite is the Autumn bear completely wrapped in some tubular outfit. Did you knit that?

Here, in Australia, we can escape junk calls too.

I have it too but still manage to get some unwanted calls. Is there a Do Not Call list to block friends and family?

Lots of interesting posts to catch up on again.
Hope you have better luck when you find a new house to move into.
Unwanted calls are a pain here. You can subscribe to a 'service' that asks 'secret' callers to identify themselves. If they won't say who they are the phone won't ring. Opting out altogsther sounds much more logical. Wish they'd introduce it here. It's so true that they don't give you a chance to interrupt and so "No thank you". My best hope is to claim I don't understand them. . . . .

We have had it for a while here in the US, and I love it. It made dinnertime so much nicer!

I let my answering maching screen my calls. If its important they will leave their name and number and then I can decide just how important it is and if I wish to call them back----if its somebody I want ot talk to I will pick ujp the phone and talk to them, if not, then will call them back later my friends and family know I do this and they understand.

We are on the do not call list here in California.
What a difference it has made. There are still some bothersome ones that get through but i tell them to take me off their list and not to call again.
Dinner time is a lot more pleasant now.

We have one here in the U.S., but there are too many loopholes. I still get calls all the time.

I'm glad it's finally out, but I wonder just how many calls it will eliminate.
The only way to know is to check it out, right?

I agree with the others from the US. I signed up a few years ago and it works....for the most part.

I am grateful for our Do Not Call system. But yes, there are loopholes. And I do not think that charities should be exempt. I feel that if I should give to a charity that calls on the phone, much of my donated money is going to pay the caller. I'd rather give directly and know that my money is doing more good

The worst nuisance calls of all are political.

Now that's an idea I really like!

wow! I wish we could have a dncl in Holland though , the companies always used to call us(anyone they like) on dinnertime, with their commercial (marketing)questions, I change my T-number every year and my cell is OFF around dinnertime, I hate that kinda phonecalls..

In Holland we also have these telemarkers always calling when you want to start dinner at six pm. I wish we had a system like yours, though we have a system that can block unwantedadvertising.
There are also those people who start saying:"Congratulations, you've won a million! Or a car" Well I don't need a million and I don't drive a car.
